Blackberry Style 9670: One Of The Best Flip Smartphone From Blackberry

Among the flip phones produced by BlackBerry, the Style 9670 for Sprint is considered as the best flip smartphone with pretty well messaging feature. With dimension 96 x 60 x 18.5 mm and weight 131 g, it is quite a chubby flip phone attach with a full QWERTY keyboard. The handset has been designed with a stunning plastic chassis that is glossy in front and faintly textured at the back giving it a classy look. The handset easily fits in to one’s hand giving a solid and well-built feel.

The BlackBerry Style 9670 comes with a 2.7-inch TFT LCD screen that has a resolution of 360 x 400 pixels. The front of the handset is further designed with a QWERTY keyboard and complete with a slightly raised touch pad. Running on both 2G and 3G network technology, the device provides an internal memory of 512 MB. However, users can further expand the memory storage of the phone up to 16GB with the help of the microSD card slot.

Running on 3G CDMA network of Sprint, the Style is an exceptional voice phone, with exception: a seriously lagging reception indicator. The handset has been paired with features like my Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars), including activating the accurate, Nuance-powered voice dialing. The battery gives a talktime up to 5 hours, 17 minutes and an excellent standby time up to more than two days.

The Style operates on its BlackBerry 6 operating system but has a slower processor. This handset is also the first ever BlackBerry 6 phone that doesn’t feature a touch screen. Without a touchscreen, users of the Style have to depend on its trackpad, which is calibrated to be a bit slippery. Messaging is one of the best features of the Style and it has many built-in email accounts including IMs, BBMs, texts, Facebook and Twitter.

You will also find some custom software integrated by Sprint in to the handset. These software include the Sprint Music Store, UI and awful DRM. Sprint TV that facilitates you to stream TV channels at a payment of certain amount per month; Sprint Navigation in the handset gives you spoken, GPS-based driving directions including traffic. Users can also download various applications in to the phone from RIM’s BlackBerry App World app store.

The Style’s 5-megapixel camera could have been much better than it is now. In the device it is ineptly placed, so it is simple to cover it along with your thumb. The continuous autofocus can make for some blurry pictures in case you don’t wait a second or so for it to lock in. It is not hideous by any means, but there is better out there. The video mode takes 640 by 480 videos at twenty frames per second with a slight pulsing effect; that is behind the 30fps they see on top-of-the-line Android & Apple rings.

Running on Sprint’s 3G CDMA network, the Style is an excellent voice phone, with one exception: a seriously lagging reception indicator. The phone showed two bars at one point when I had no signal, and at another point it showed weak 1X coverage when I had strong EVDO coverage. That doesn’t affect call quality, but it’s a misleading. Voice calls sounded absolutely terrific—loud and rich without distortion. There are even options to bump up bass or treble during calls. The speakerphone is loud and clear, although it doesn’t work with the flip closed—a missed opportunity, for sure.
